Click tracking
Click tracking turns any URL into a short tracked link, so you see which LinkedIn profiles, posts and comments send people to your website, and from which countries. On Business, the links can live on your own domain instead of scripe.io.
It is for team admins and agencies who need to show what LinkedIn brings to a website. Everyone in the workspace can use tracked links in their posts; only admins set up a custom domain.
How it works
A tracked link is a short address that points to your destination URL. When someone opens it:
- Scripe records the click: the country, region and city, device, browser and language, and the page the click came from.
- The visitor is sent on to the destination right away.
Clicks from bots and link-preview crawlers are recorded but never counted.
Each link has placements: the places it is used. Every placement gets its own short address, so a click is credited to the place it came from.
| Placement | Where it lives | How it is created |
|---|---|---|
| Profile page | The website field of a LinkedIn profile | Add profiles in the link's details |
| Company Page | The website link of a LinkedIn Company Page | Add placement → Company Page |
| Post & comment placements | A link inside a post or an engagement comment | Turn on Track link? when you add the link in the post editor |
| Other placements | Anywhere else: a newsletter, a website, a webinar invite | Add placement → Other |
Results appear in Analytics → Conversion under click tracking: clicks over time, country breakdown, best performing profiles and placements. Tracked link clicks also feed the conversion funnel. They are counted by click date, for the whole workspace.
Creating a tracked link
Open Settings → Click tracking and choose New Link. Pick where the link will be used, paste the destination URL, and optionally name it. Then copy the short URL, or open the link's details to add more placements.
Put a profile placement on LinkedIn
In the link's details, choose Add profiles and pick the profiles. Copy each profile's address and paste it into the website field of that person's LinkedIn profile. Until it is there, the profile's status shows it is not on the profile yet.
Track a link inside a post
In the post editor, select the link and turn on Track link?. Scripe replaces the link in the post with a tracked address right away, and the post appears under the link's Post & comment placements.
A profile can point to one tracked link at a time. Adding it to another link moves it there; the clicks it collected while on the first link stay counted on that link.
Your own domain
On Business, tracked links can be served on a domain you own, such as links.your-company.com or your-company.com, instead of scripe.io/link/…. A workspace has one custom domain.
Subdomain or root domain
- A subdomain (
links.your-company.com) leaves your website where it is. You add a CNAME record that points the subdomain at Scripe. - A root domain (
your-company.com) sends that whole hostname to Scripe's short links. If your website runs there, it stops loading as soon as the DNS change takes effect. Scripe asks you to confirm this by typing the hostname before it adds a root domain. You add A records instead of a CNAME.
Scripe shows the exact records for your domain. Use the values it shows; they are specific to your domain.
Setting it up
Add the domain
In Settings → Click tracking, open the custom domain settings and enter the domain.
Add both DNS records at your domain provider
The routing record (CNAME or A) sends visitors to Scripe. The TXT record named
_scripe-verifyproves the domain is yours. The domain goes live only once Scripe can see the TXT record.Check again
DNS changes can take a few hours to spread. Press Check again once the records are in. The status moves from Waiting for DNS or Waiting for verification to Active.
Choose where the bare domain sends visitors
Under Where should … itself send visitors?, enter an
httporhttpsaddress. Someone who opens the domain without a link path is sent there.
Leave every record in place. Scripe re-checks the TXT record every night; remove it and the domain eventually stops serving your links.
What changes when the domain is active
- New tracked links use your domain. Links created before keep their scripe.io address.
- Every link keeps working on scripe.io as well.
- Scripe checks the domain every night. If it stops working, the status changes to Not working and workspace admins get an email. Tracked links on the domain do not resolve until the DNS is fixed.
- A setup that has not finished after 7 days is removed, and you can start again.
Removing the domain
Remove domain asks for confirmation and names how many links use the domain. Those links go back to their scripe.io address, and their address on your domain stops working. Links already shared with your domain in them stop resolving, so update them where you can.
Limits and plans
| What | Plan |
|---|---|
| Tracked links, placements and click analytics | Business |
| Custom domain | Business, one per workspace |
If the workspace moves to a plan without custom domains, links on the domain keep working, and new links use scripe.io. See Plans.
Edge cases
- Agency clients do not see click tracking, in settings or in Analytics.
- A domain already used for something else: a domain set up as a white-label domain for the workspace cannot also serve tracked links; support can free it. A domain another workspace uses cannot be added.
- A certificate error: Scripe issues the domain's certificate. If the domain resolves but the certificate cannot be issued, turn off any proxy in front of the domain and check its CAA records.
