The Instagram post size is 1080 pixels wide, at any shape from 1.91:1 (landscape, 1080 × 566) to 3:4 (portrait, 1080 × 1440); a square post is 1080 × 1080. Choose a size below, add your image and save it cropped to fit. Every size here comes from Meta's own help, developer and ads pages, checked on 16 October 2026.

Instagram image sizes at a glance

Here are the sizes for Instagram posts, carousels, Stories and Reels in one table, as Meta's pages give them on 16 October 2026. Where Meta publishes no size, the table says so.

Instagram post size: 1080 pixels wide

Instagram's help page says a photo keeps its resolution when its shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4: at 1080 pixels wide, any height from 566 to 1440 pixels. A photo with another shape is cropped to fit one Instagram supports.

Width matters most. Instagram keeps photos from 320 to 1080 pixels wide as they are, enlarges a narrower one to 320 pixels and reduces a wider one to 1080, so it recommends uploading at least 1080 pixels wide. The cropper saves every Instagram post at 1080 wide.

3:4 or 4:5 for portrait posts

Until mid-2025 the tallest portrait post was 4:5. Archived copies of Instagram's help page give the range as 1.91:1 to 4:5 on 25 May 2025 and as 1.91:1 to 3:4 on 5 August 2025.

The app now takes 3:4, but Meta's publishing API, which apps and scheduling tools use to post to business and creator accounts, still accepts 4:5 to 1.91:1, JPEG files only and up to 8 MB. If you post in the app, 3:4 (1080 × 1440) is the tallest shape it takes; if a tool publishes for you, crop to 4:5 (1080 × 1350).

Carousel posts

A carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos, and the orientation you choose (square, portrait or landscape) applies to all of them. Crop every image in a carousel to the same size before you upload. Through the publishing API a carousel holds up to 10 items, cropped to the first image's shape, 1:1 by default.

Instagram story size

Instagram publishes no size for an ordinary Story. Its publishing API recommends 9:16, and Meta's ad specification for Instagram Stories gives 1440 × 2560 pixels as a JPG or PNG; the cropper uses that size. For ads, Meta advises leaving about 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side free of text and logos, so the profile icon and the ad's call-to-action button don't cover them and nothing key is cropped.

Reel size and Reel cover

You can upload a Reel at any shape between 1.91:1 and 9:16, with a resolution of at least 720 pixels and at least 30 frames per second. For the cover, Instagram recommends 420 × 654 pixels, and its help page says that, for now, you can't change the cover after you upload it. The publishing API instead recommends a 9:16 cover and uses its middle square when the Reel appears in the feed.

Instagram profile picture size

Instagram's help pages give no size for profile photos. Upload a square image: the cropper's square post size, 1080 × 1080, gives you one.

How to crop an image for Instagram

The cropper above saves your image at exactly the size you choose, without uploading it anywhere.

  1. Choose the size, for example a portrait post.
  2. Choose an image, or drop it on the frame.
  3. Drag the image or use the sliders to frame it, and zoom in to crop tighter.
  4. Choose JPG or PNG, then download the file and upload it on Instagram.

If the part you chose has fewer pixels than the size, the cropper warns that it will enlarge the image, which can make it look blurry. Zoom out, or use a larger image. For LinkedIn, Facebook, X, YouTube and other networks, the social media image size guide has the sizes each network publishes.

Planning LinkedIn posts with Scripe

Scripe is a social media management platform for B2B teams and agencies, built LinkedIn-first. Today it supports LinkedIn, not Instagram. For your team's LinkedIn posts, its post editor shows each draft as a LinkedIn card at a click, a post can carry up to 20 images, and Scripe checks every image against LinkedIn's limits before it publishes. The LinkedIn image sizes page lists LinkedIn's own sizes, and the content calendar shows how a team plans its posts.
