Enter the interactions and at least one number to divide by.
A post's insights on Instagram show no engagement rate, so the calculator gives you a rate for every basis you fill in. In Meta's API, views have replaced impressions for posts created from 2 July 2024.

How to calculate engagement rate on Instagram
An Instagram engagement rate is a post's likes, comments, shares and saves divided by its reach, its views or the account's followers, times 100. The number you divide by is the basis:
| Basis | Formula | What the rate tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | Interactions ÷ reach × 100 | Interactions per account that saw the post |
| Views | Interactions ÷ views × 100 | Interactions per view of the post |
| Followers | Interactions per post ÷ followers × 100 | Interactions per post against the whole audience, including accounts that never saw it |
In the calculator's example, a post's 310 likes, 22 comments, 15 shares and 41 saves make 388 interactions: 6.69% of 5,800 accounts reached, 4.00% of 9,700 views and 3.23% of 12,000 followers. For several posts, enter the totals and the number of posts; the calculator divides the interactions by the number of posts first, then by your followers.
What Instagram counts
A post's insights count reach, views, likes, comments, shares, saves and reposts, plus a total of interactions, but no engagement rate. Meta's media insights reference defines them. Checked on 16 October 2026:
| Count | What Meta counts |
|---|---|
| Reach | Estimated number of unique accounts that saw the post at least once |
| Views | Times the post was played on Instagram |
| Likes and comments | Likes and comments on the post |
| Shares | Times the post was shared |
| Saves | Times the post was saved |
| Reposts | Reposts of the post, minus deleted reposts |
| Total interactions | Likes, saves, comments and shares, minus unlikes, unsaves and deleted comments; reposts not included |
Meta's reference still lists impressions, but only for posts created before 2 July 2024. According to Meta's platform changelog, views arrived on 21 January 2025, and since 21 April 2025 no API version returns impressions for posts created on or after 2 July 2024.
Meta notes that the data behind these counts can be up to 48 hours late, so wait two days before you work out a post's rate. Reporting apps read your numbers through Meta's API, where the standard like, comment and view counts are organic only. The API's total like, comment and view counts also include boosted posts, and Facebook crossposts may be included; according to Meta, those totals match the Instagram app's insights. So take a post's counts from the same place every time.
To find a post's numbers in the app, follow Instagram's help on post insights and reel insights:
- Go to your profile, or to its Reels tab for a reel.
- Tap the post or reel.
- Tap View insights.
On a reel's insights, Instagram calls reach Viewers: the unique accounts that saw the reel on screen at least once. Enter that number as reach.
The calculator adds up the counts you fill in, the same four that make up Meta's total of interactions, and leaves reposts out. Our general engagement rate calculator shows which networks publish a rate of their own.
Reach, views or followers?
Divide by reach to see how the accounts that saw a post responded, by views to measure against every play, and by followers only to compare accounts, because followers include accounts that never saw the post. Reach counts each account once and views count repeats, so a post's rate by reach is usually higher than its rate by views. If you report on a company's or a client's account, keep one basis from report to report so the numbers compare.
Meta shows a post's reach and saves only to the account and to the people and apps it has given access to. A post's rate worked out from a handle alone therefore has to do without them and rests on counts such as likes and comments. To check another account, add up the public likes and comments of its recent posts, where the account shows them, and enter that total, the number of posts and its followers: the calculator then shows the rate by followers.
What is a good Instagram engagement rate?
A good Instagram engagement rate is one above your own usual rate, on the same basis. This page quotes no Instagram average, and one quoted without its formula tells you little: in the calculator's example, the same post reads 6.69% by reach and 3.23% by followers. An average worked out from public numbers alone cannot include reach or saves, so compare it only with a rate of yours worked out from the same public counts. Compare reels with reels and feed posts with feed posts: a reel is played and replayed, and every play is a view.
Your usual rate is the median of your recent posts' rates: work out each post's rate on the same basis, take the middle one and compare each new post with it. For a quick average, enter the totals of your recent posts and the number of posts. Totals give posts with more reach or views more weight.
Reporting on LinkedIn as well?
If your team also reports on LinkedIn, Scripe's analytics show the engagement rate of every connected LinkedIn profile, as reactions, comments and reposts by impressions, over the period you pick. For a single LinkedIn post, the LinkedIn engagement rate calculator works out the rate from the counts LinkedIn shows, and for Company Pages shows which result matches LinkedIn's own formula.
